Birseck Castle Hike

July 6, 2022. My son and I went on a nice, afternoon hike yesterday to Arlesheim to see the Birseck Castle (I love old castles). It has been uninhabited since 1763, but not yet a ruin. In 1793 the French soldiers burned down the living quarters. Conrad von Andlau, Balbina’s son, bought the castle and now the ruins of Birseck in 1808.
We took the tram south to Arlesheim, about an hour from Basel. Then we hiked (actually it was a pretty easy walk) up through the woods, passing lovely ponds filled with fat, lazy fish and beautiful creeks, forests and unusual glacial rock outcroppings.
Walking through these old, fertile lands, listening to the cow bells from the valley below and feeling the cool breezes coming through the forest is one of the most calming, grounding experiences ever. This is as close to paradise as one can get.
